HOW & WHY WE CITE SOURCES
Now that you've watched the Common Sense video on fair use in the previous lesson, you should have a basic understanding of copyrighted works and how one can use them.

In the educational setting you are allowed to use small pieces of others' works BUT you must give attribution. If you do not, you may be guilty of plagiarism, which can have serious consequences (failure of the assignment, or-- in college--failure of the whole course and being dropped from your degree program!).
It's in your best interest to learn how to properly give attribution and get in the habit of always crediting others' for their ideas and words.
In writing we call this CITATION.
- There are numerous styles used in citation of sources, but you will probably use MLA or APA citation in high school.
- You will use in-text citation in the paragraphs of your writing (see example below).
- The in-text citations must match what you put on your Works Cited reference page (or Bibliography).
