Welcome to the 1st Semester of the 2025-26 school year and to United States History. This is a full-year class that is required to graduate from Petersburg High School.

United States History Since 1877 Syllabus

Course Description:
This course covers significant events in United States history from 1877 to World War 1

Topics Covered

  • Gilded Age
  • Imperialism
  • the Progressive Era
  • World War 1

Required Materials:

  • Textbook: American History (2018 HMH Social Studies)
  • Notebook for notes and assignments
  • Computer 

Grading Policy:
Quarter grades will be determined by the following components:

  • Tests/Quizzes: 30%
  • Homework: 30%
  • Participation (Weekly Discussions/Class Starters/Cornell Notes): 20%
  • Quarter Project: 20%

Semester Grade:
Semester grade will be determined by the following components:

  • Quarter 1 - 40%
  • Quarter 2 - 40%
  • Semester Final: 20% 

Deadlines and Late work:

  •   Late Work: Assignments submitted after the deadline are considered late or missing.
    •   Initial Grade Entry: A zero (0) will be entered in the gradebook (PowerSchool) for all late or missing work. This reflects the student’s current grade without the assignment.
    •   Late Work Penalties:
      •   Up to 5 school days late: maximum score is 80% of the assignment’s value (e.g., a 100-point assignment can earn up to 80 points).
      •   Between 6 and 20 school days late: maximum score is 50% of the assignment’s value.
      •   More than 20 school days late: no credit will be given.
    •   Gradebook Flags: Late or missing work will be flagged in PowerSchool.
  •   Appeals: Students or teachers may submit a written appeal to administration for exceptions due to unusual circumstances. Administration will respond within one calendar week.

Grading Scale:

  • 100: A+
  • 99-93: A
  • 92-90: A-
  • 89-88: B+
  • 87-83: B
  • 82-80: B-
  • 79-78: C+
  • 77-73: C
  • 72-70: C
  • 69-68: D+
  • 67-63: D
  • 62-60: D-
  • 59-0: F

Class Policies and Expectations:

  • Attendance: Regular attendance is crucial for success in this course.
  • Preparation: Students are expected to come prepared for each class with necessary materials.

Academic Integrity:
Honesty is an essential aspect of academic integrity. Students are responsible for completing their own work and submitting original assignments as per the course directions.

  • Plagiarism: Defined as "to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own without crediting the source." This includes using information from the Internet without citation. Always acknowledge the source of others' words and ideas.
  • Cheating: Submitting or presenting an assignment created by someone else as your own is strictly prohibited.
